I'm a small business owner that's looking to grow my business using Instagram so when I bought this book I was hoping to get a handbook of tips and tricks on how to do that. This book does none of that. Instead it offers flippant advice like "when you take a picture, be sure to follow the lines of where the eye is going to get a great shot". That's it. No explanation of what "the lines" are. No explanation for why that's important. And then the author follows it up with a few pictures from her Instagram account (including a shot of herself with Pharrell) - not sure what that had to do with "following the lines ". In the end, it seemed more like an omage to herself and her best Instagram photos than a "how to grow on Instagram book". It would've at least been tolerable had she shared her personal stories about her struggles and successes with Instagram, but she doesn't do that either. There's a lot of "be your best", "take great pictures", "love what you do" type speak. As for personal experiences (i.e.when she's not bragging about a time when some fashion designer paid her way to some elusive island vacation so she could post it on her Instagram account) all you'll get is an "oh, but don't do that, I did it once and it was horrible. " My last beef with this book, and admittedly it is a nitpick, is her use of text language and hashtags in the actual text. At one point she actually says "document your life in a way that makes you proud (#word)." Really? Why the hashtag? Maybe I'm too old to get it- who knows- but the only thing I got from this book was annoyed.
I love Aimee. I have been following her for YEARS and was so excited when she released this book. However, I do have to agree with some of the reviews here. The book was marketed as a "how to" guide on building your brand but lacks substance on the matter itself. The book is an easy read with a little bit of a "how to" aspect. The main topic of Instagram and the photography skills and tips is nothing groundbreaking. I found myself reading tips that were redundant throughout and pretty standard for anyone who has ever used the app. My main issue with the book, however, was the language. It did not feel authentic to her and it was quite cheesy, almost cringeworthy. The book lacked her "voice" and I had a hard time finding the tips genuine to her and her brand.If you're new to social media, I can see how this could be helpful but you can honestly google everything in here and get better insights. There are countless Youtube videos on this precise topic that offer better examples. Needless to say, I was sadly disappointed with this book. Perhaps it was just too overhyped? I'll continue to admire her work online, but this was a flop for me.
Do not buy this book unless you have no idea what instagram is or how it works. If you actually have Instagram and have been posting on it, this book will be of no use to you. I was deeply disappointed by this book. I expected much more information on how to gain followers, more information on editing pics, just more depth. This was a brilliant way for Song to make money. But it really isn't useful to those trying to build a business or following. Use the internet and find more useful tips for free.
Easy to read and Aimee is a darling even in this book but majority of the info is already known or easily available on the internet
Honestly, was pretty surprised I ended up enjoying this book.Though the first few pages were kind of pointless (if you already know Instagram and its lingo) she does offer a lot of great feedback in terms of angles and goals. The author really has thought thoroughly through the Instagram product and it makes sense why she is so successful. Wishing the author the best of luck and hope she enjoys the fruits of her efforts.I even recommended the book to a few friends who don't really use Instagram but would like to get started on it. This was a quick crash course for them. Happy to share :)

I bought this because i am taking photography classes and having already been a follower of song of style on instagram I wanted to get into her mind a little. This book is essential to anyone wanting to polish their social media presence, or to just learn to take better photos on your phone. As always Aimee Song nailed it! 😘
Wanted to read something about Instagram and this was one of the few books that were for individuals and not businesses. Useful stuff, but for some reason written solely for women. Still, useful primer. Seriously lightweight, but I guess it might go with the medium. I wonder if there are some more serious books about Instagram yet?
